An elegy for the victims of the pandemic, All That Is Lost explores the deep, pervasive sense of grief and loss that has defined the preceding years. The music is at times sorrowful, lyrical, angry, contemplative, soaring, and, ultimately, healing and hopeful. Shakuhachi brings a distinct quality that blends with and builds on the rich colors of the orchestra, as it inhabits a space between the free floating rhythm and intensely expressive gestures of hōnkyoku – the traditional music of the instrument – and a more melodically defined style.

All That Is Lost was commissioned by and is dedicated to the Huntsville Youth Orchestra and its director, Joseph Lee.
