The Huntsville Youth Orchestra and soloist Christopher Molina premiere Donald Womack’s concertino for shakuhachi and orchestra. Mournful and contemplative, yet healing and hopeful, the piece is an elegy to the victims of the pandemic and all that has been lost. Shakuhachi inhabits a space between the free floating rhythm and intensely expressive gestures of hōnkyoku – the traditional music of the instrument – and a more lyrical style.
