Among the many mind-boggling phenomena of space are gravitational waves, disturbances created by cosmic collisions of massive objects such as black holes, which can reshape the fabric of space-time itself. The notion of invisible waves of gravity rippling across the vast universe was the inspiration for The Rippling Fabric of Time.
The piece explores two sides of daegeum. The still and spacious first half of the piece drifts through echoing, undulating gestures that gently billow, swell and recede. Midway through, the character shifts, transforming the music into an energized, sweeping rush of notes. In both sections, rippling figures predominate as time seemingly expands, contracts and becomes displaced. Much like a universe that curves in upon itself, the opening of the piece eventually returns, suggesting an endless flow of ripples…
About 10 minutes long, The Rippling Fabric of Time was commissioned by Kyeongeun Yoo, to whom it is dedicated.
