The title piece refers to the context in which the piece was written. Having just completed an energetic piece that I considered successful, I wanted to quickly write another piece that could feed off of that energy — in effect, I wanted to “slingshot” from one piece into the next. The title also reflects the violent nature of the piece, which undergoes many abrupt transformations in dynamics, rhythm, and timbre. Toward this end, the piece exploits the extremes of the pitch and dynamic ranges of each instrument, frequently spreading out to its widest points before “snapping back” to the middle register of the ensemble, much like a slingshot snaps back to its middle position after being pulled and released.
