Dokkaebi, creatures of Korean mythology, run wild in Goblins (Dokkaebi). Not quite evil, but not nice either, they constantly play tricks on humans who cross paths with them, often punishing evil deeds. Their playful mischief is sometimes put to beneficial use through the bringing of good luck though, so one would be well advised to stay on their good side. You might try to outsmart them, but do so at your own risk…

Good antics and bad are found in the piece, as the mood vacillates between fiercely angry and lightly playful, while the goblins subject the unfortunate to their naughty exploits. The opening fast section is frequently sidetracked by confusion, as the goblins (and music) again and again lose their way. A slow and deliberate middle section leads to a mocking climax that falls apart, with the grotesque creatures taunting and teasing, before briskly running away and disappearing in the final section.

About 10 minutes long, Goblins (Dokkaebi) was commissioned by oboist Youn Joo Lee. While inspired by Korean dokkaebi, goblins from everywhere are welcome.
