The title refers to several characteristics of the piece. Structurally it consists of two contrasting parts, the first half frenetic, disjointed and driving, the second slow and mysterious. Harmonically the piece takes on the characteristics of double talk — evasive or misleading talk, or meaningless speech that pretends to be meaningful — in the sense that it sounds tonal, yet evades clear tonal centers, and its melodic lines seem to wander toward destinations that are never quite reached. In addition, the two performers constantly exchange phrases, motives, and various other ideas, resulting in a musical dialogue between two diverse but complimentary instruments, a sort of “double talk”.
Double Talk is the recipient of the Sigma Alpha Iota 1993 Inter-American Music Award.
