In 도깨비 (Dokkaebi) the mythological demons of Korean folklore take on musical form. Their mischievous pranks are heard in the capricious interplay of notes, as the gayageum itself is seemingly transformed into a musical goblin, spinning out various ideas — quirky lines that leap around the instrument, grooving riffs that abruptly appear and disappear, and a slow dancelike section that morphs into something else entirely, all building to a demonic finish. In the end, the grotesque creatures scurry away, hiding again until they once more decide to come out and play.
