POINTS OF INTERSECTION: AN AMERICAN COMPOSER MEETS EAST ASIAN INSTRUMENTS

 

In this article, adapted from a keynote speech given at the Taipei Chinese Orchestra’s 2023 International Symposium on New Music for Chinese Instruments, Donald Womack discusses his experiences composing for East Asian instruments, focusing on the importance of finding points of intersection between the natural capabilities of the instruments a composer writes for and the composer’s own artistic voice.
