Salpuri originated hundreds of years ago as a purification dance, performed by a shaman to expel evil spirits. Although it has evolved over time to become more performed art than ritual, it nonetheless retains the same essential elements. Foremost, it embodies han, a sense of deep sorrow that permeates Korean culture. Salpuri is characterized by circular, flowing movements, which the dancer accentuates with the sweeping motions of a long white scarf. A slow and deliberate beginning gradually becomes more active before calming and settling back into the opening tempo. The dancer’s ultimate return to the same spot on the stage where she began represents a cycle, not just closure but a new beginning, since the same spot is reached, but now with a fresh state of being.

Salpuri Shadows 살풀이의 그림자 draws on the essential character of its source of inspiration, emulating the elegant grace and sorrowful character of the dance. The piece follows the dance in the way shadows represent objects – not the objects themselves, but the result of the objects being viewed from a particular perspective. After a strong opening gesture from the piri, the piece, like the dance, gradually proceeds from a sense of calm to grow more exciting. After a pause for reflection in the middle, it again begins to build, eventually reaching a state of great agitation before finally returning to where it began and closing/opening the cycle.

About 12 minutes long, Salpuri Shadows was commissioned by Yunkyong Jin, to whom it is dedicated.

살풀이 춤은 한반도의 무속의식에서 나쁜 기운과 악령을 물리치기 위해 추는 정화의 춤으로 서 시작되었다. 오랜 시간이 지나면서 무대 공연 예술로 변화되었지만, 제의에서 비롯된 필 수 요소들은 변함없이 지속되어 왔다. 특히 한국 문화에 스며들어 있는 깊은 슬픔의 감정인 한의 정서를 그대로 구현하고 있다는 점이 특징이다.

춤을 추는 사람은 기다란 흰 수건을 휘저어 원을 그리며 이 감정을 표현하고 있는데, 느리고 신중하게 시작하지만 때로는 격렬해 지고 안정되었다가 활발해진다. 춤을 시작한 지점에서 다시 춤을 마무리하는 모습은 ‘끝’이면서도 ‘새로운 시작’을 의미하는 것으로 살풀이 춤에 내 포된 ‘순환’의 과정을 엿볼 수 있다.

<Salpuri Shadows>는 살풀이에서 나타나는 우아하면서도 슬픈 감정을 음악적으로 모방함으 로서, 이 춤에서 나타나는 본질적인 성격을 이끌어내고자 하였다. 이 작품은 그림자가 사물 을 표현하는 방식으로 춤을 따라가는데, 이는 사물 자체가 아니라 특정 관점에서 사물을 본 결과이다. 피리의 강렬한 도입 선율 이후 마치 춤을 추듯 잔잔한 느낌에서 점차 격정적으로 전개된다. 잠시 호흡을 가다듬고 멈추다가, 다시 절정을 향해 간다. 마침내 큰 동요 상태에 도달한 후, 순환의 끝이자 시작이었던 지점에 다다르게 된다. 12분 길이의 <Salpuri Shadows>는 곡을 위촉한 피리 연주자 진윤경에게 헌정된 곡이다.
