fff (falling, floating, flying) is a set of three character pieces, played without pause. Apart from alliteration, they are bound by a common theme of groundlessness, of having air between oneself and the earth, though in markedly contrasting ways. The first piece is pure vertigo, a freefall that spirals ever downward, never quite reaching bottom. The slow middle piece drifts gently through a misty harmonic haze, in time softly suspended. The set closes by gliding, swooping, sailing, diving — pushing faster and higher into the deep sky. fff was written for cellist I-Bei Lin and pianist Jonathan Korth.
