Rich, lush, simple and unabashedly melodic, the piece is an expanded version of the elegy the composer wrote for his father, and draws inspiration from a 15th sijo poem of Seong Sammun.

What will become of me after I die?
I’ll turn into a pine tree, growing on Bongrae Mountain.
Then, from atop the mountain of the immortals,
Alone, I would remain green,
When snow falls on the ground
And all else is white.

—Seong Sammun (1418–1456)

백설(白雪)이 만건곤(滿乾坤)할 제 독야청청(獨也靑靑) 하리라.
